Orange Still Life Study

The Orange Still Life study for Drawing I (Part A), focused on the usage of line, shape, value, and texture within a singular study. For the project, I explored realism through ink, focused on inspiration from Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro and the expressive mark-making of Impressionism. I began with a line drawing and grid system, to accurately identify proportion and spatial relationships using both positive and negative shapes. Soft values were layered first, followed by mid-tones and textured marks to suggest surface details such as fruit and wood grain. The intentional darkening of the upper right corner further developed the chiaroscuro effect, which reinforced the dramatic lighting. This project deepened my connection to the ink medium, the usage of line, shape, value, and texture.
